Ulysses Reading Group Meeting – Sunday 25 March 2012

We are starting a new chapter at the next meeting of the Ulysses reading group. This is chapter 12, the Cyclops episode which begins “! was just passing the time of day with old Troy of the C.M.P.”.

It is now 5pm and Bloom has arranged to meet Martin Cunningham in Barney Kiernan’s pub. Homer’s version has Odysseus and his crew held captive in the cave of Polyphemus, one a of a race of one-eyed giants called the Cyclops. Joyce’s giant is the Citizen, an Irish nationalist and xenophobe. The chapter is taken up with political discussions and pub banter, with a nameless narrator commenting on the action. A sort of Greek chorus also keeps up a running commentary in a variety of styles: epic, parliamentary report, newspaper article, etc.

For this meeting we have linked up with the Headingley LitFest and opened the meeting to any interested parties.
